About the work:
drawing together, apart is an ecological exploration of the inner workings of an orchestra. The title is deliberately ambiguous and broad but at its most literal highlights the ambiguity and potentialities of the word draw as it can both be used in the context of drawing things together and drawing them apart. To leave the potential of this title however would be ill advised as in its other meanings the word draw has other connections to music and the orchestra, when writing or annotating scores we are so often drawing, and in the orchestra the drawing of a bow across the strings is fundamental to string playing, wind players draw breath and in any one piece percussionists play instruments drawn from a much larger collection. The vast potentialities suggested by the title allows for the creation and fostering of ecological interconnection both within the piece, the orchestra playing it and to the wider world.
